On November 2nd, a team-building event was held in Kyiv for doctors and nurses of mobile teams working in the Kramatorsk community. The goal of the event was to improve the communication skills of healthcare workers and enhance their ability to handle complex emotional situations when working with patients.
The training program focused on learning the SPIKES protocol, a key tool for delivering difficult medical information and providing emotional support to patients. Participants were introduced to the main stages of this protocol and had the opportunity to practice their skills through practical exercises and role-playing scenarios.

Key Aspects of the Training:
Pre-test Evaluation – Participants completed a test to assess their level of knowledge before the training.
Introduction and Icebreaker – Creating a trusting atmosphere for open exchange of experiences and communication among participants.
Learning the SPIKES Protocol – A detailed breakdown of each stage of the protocol:
- Setting (environment setup),
- Perception (assessing the patient’s perception),
- Invitation (inviting discussion),
- Knowledge (delivering information),
- Emotions (recognizing and managing emotions),
- Strategy (strategies for follow-up actions).
Practical Exercises – Developing strategies for interacting with patients in difficult situations, creating a comfortable environment for discussing important medical matters, and training in delivering sensitive information while considering emotional reactions.
Post-test – Assessing the participants' progress and summarizing the results of the training.
This event not only improved the communication skills of healthcare professionals but also provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen teamwork, mutual support, and collaboration among doctors and nurses. Thanks to the knowledge and skills gained, our specialists will be even more effective in providing high-quality care to patients, considering the emotional aspects of complex medical situations.
We would like to thank all participants for their engagement and willingness to improve their skills in providing quality care!
This event was organized as part of the "Ensuring Access to Critical Medical Assistance in Eastern Ukraine" project, supported by CARE.Ukraine.
