First Aid: How to Act in Critical Situations

Ця публікація також доступна такими мовами: Українська (Ukrainian)

At the beginning of January, the "Health Solutions" team completed training in first aid, including "Stop the Bleed," Basic Life Support (BLS), and emergency conditions. In times of war and crisis, this knowledge can be life-saving.

Why is first aid important? In a critical moment, someone's life may depend on your actions. That is why skills such as stopping bleeding, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and providing psychological support are essential for everyone.

Our trainers were specialists from the NGO "All-Ukrainian Union Patriot," who shared the best practices in emergency assistance. Additionally, there was a training session on "Fundamentals of Psychological First Aid and Self-Help" by Iryna Markevych (Charitable Foundation "Kharkiv with You") and a course on "Media and Communications" by Zurab Alasania (media manager, chairman of the Supervisory Board of the "Health Solutions" Foundation, senior lieutenant of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine).

Key Insights from the Training:

How to Stop Bleeding if You Have One Tourniquet but Two Wounds?

Time is the biggest enemy in cases of severe bleeding. The first action is to apply direct pressure to the wound. If there are two wounds but only one tourniquet, apply it to the more dangerous wound and use wound packing or a pressure bandage for the other.

How to Call an Ambulance Properly?

In a critical moment, taking responsibility is crucial. If no one responds to your request to call an ambulance, address a specific person, make eye contact, say their name or give a clear description ("You, in the blue jacket!") and ask them to call 103 or 112.

How Does Stress Affect Critical Thinking?

The amygdala is the part of the brain that controls emotions. Under stress, it becomes overactive, while the neocortex (responsible for rational thinking) slows down. This explains why panic and manipulation affect our decision-making. Critical thinking and emotional control help counteract this.

Why Should You Take First Aid Training?

First aid skills can save lives before medical professionals arrive. The more people who know how to provide emergency care, the greater the chances of survival in emergency situations.

We thank the NGO "All-Ukrainian Union Patriot" and the Charitable Foundation "Kharkiv with You" for their training!

Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
