Every year on February 4, the world observes World Cancer Day – a reminder of the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and access to cancer treatment.
Oncological diseases remain one of the leading causes of mortality in Ukraine, and the global trend of increasing cancer cases is a pressing issue. Not only is access to quality treatment crucial, but overcoming cancer phobia – the fear of diagnosis – is also essential. Many people delay visiting a doctor out of fear of hearing a terrible diagnosis, even though regular check-ups can save lives.
Why Is Cancer Screening Important?
The Health Index study in Ukraine shows that only 48% of women visited a gynecologist for preventive purposes in 2024, and only 41.3% underwent a cytological smear test. Only 21.8% of women had a mammographic examination. Among men, the numbers are even lower: only 19% visited a urologist for a preventive check-up. These are the lowest rates recorded in recent years.
Medical prevention includes two main methods:
- Screening – testing without symptoms to detect the disease at an early stage.
- Early diagnosis – testing when symptoms appear, allowing timely treatment to begin.
Recommended Examinations
For Women:
- From age 21 – regular screenings for cervical cancer (CC) and breast cancer (BC);
- From age 30 – Pap test or HPV test;
- At ages 50-69 – mammography every two years.
For Men:
- From age 40 – an annual urologist check-up for early detection of prostate cancer.
For Both Genders:
- Every six months – ultrasound of the thyroid gland and abdominal organs.
Early Detection Saves Lives
Cancers detected at early stages are, in most cases, completely curable. Regular preventive check-ups allow for the timely detection of precancerous conditions and help prevent the development of cancer. Your health is in your hands – don’t postpone your doctor’s visit.
