Health Solutions for an Open Society Announces Mini-Grant Competition

The Charitable Foundation “Health Solutions for an Open Society” has long supported the creation of healthy communities by integrating the efforts of the public and local governments around human health priorities. We are now announcing a mini-grant program for representatives of 5 communities.

Objective of the Grant program

To support initiatives from five urban territorial communities: Bucha, Kramatorsk, Mukachevo, Pervomaisk in the Kharkiv region, and Skvyra, aimed at implementing projects for the prevention, early detection, and prevention of complications from non-communicable diseases: diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.

Participants

Public organizations, public unions, municipal non-profit health care institutions, social protection institutions, and other officially registered non-profit organizations are invited to participate. Preference will be given to applicants registered in the specified communities, with their main activities conducted within these communities.

Grant Application Should Address One or More Priority Areas for Communities:

  • Cancer Prevention
  • Cardiovascular Disease and Complications Prevention
  • Diabetes Prevention and Complications
  • General Prevention

Examples of Possible Activities/Interventions:

  • Preparation and conduct of schools for patients or community residents at risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.
  • Formation of self-help groups based on the peer-to-peer principle for patients with cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, to exchange information, provide health support advice, obtain necessary medical assistance, social protection, and engage in activities promoting health and functional activity.
  • Setting up and organizing small sports grounds, rehabilitation rooms, physical therapy facilities.
  • Conducting various open events and activities involving community residents at risk or with existing diseases for early diagnosis, prevention of complications, information about available services, and opportunities for support.

Participants must consider the dissemination of methods/activities developed during the project implementation, informing the public about the project's progress and results, and spreading best practices.

Preference will be given to project proposals that:

  • Most comprehensively and fully address the competition's priorities.
  • Are submitted by participants with prior experience working at the community level.

Criteria for Evaluating Project Proposals:

  • Compliance of the submitted project proposal with the goal and priority areas of the competition.
  • Clarity of the project's goal, and alignment of tasks and activities with the project's goal.
  • Project's anticipated impact on achieving positive changes, involvement of public authorities and civil society institutions in achieving these changes.
  • Completeness of approaches to problem-solving.
  • Previous experience of the participant in carrying out activities as outlined in the project proposal.
  • Realism of project execution, presence of a clear implementation plan, effectiveness of proposed project implementation mechanisms, and achievability of expected results.
  • Consideration of equality and non-discrimination principles in planned project activities.
  • Project sustainability after the completion of its implementation.

Important Information

  • Total competition budget: 1,000,000 UAH
  • Optimal grant size: 50,000 UAH
  • Deadline for submitting project proposals: January 26, 2024
  • Announcement of results: by March 5, 2024
  • Expected start date: April 1, 2024

Project activities must be conducted in collaboration with local government authorities. Project duration: up to 5 months. Project proposals will be reviewed by a committee comprising representatives from the community and the project. The competition is expected to support approximately 4 projects in each community. Project proposals must be submitted by filling out a form on the website.

Proposals submitted after January 26, 2024, will not be considered.

Estimated Project Implementation Dates:

  • Start: April 1, 2024
  • End: September 30, 2024

Proposals submitted in any way other than specified above will not be considered. Proposals will be disqualified if any undisclosed conflict of interest is found among the grant application review committee members.

The Charitable Foundation "Health Solutions" reserves the right to reject grant applications without providing reasons.

Project Budget Expenses Must:

  • Be necessary for project implementation.
  • Be incurred during the project execution period.
  • Adhere to the principles of cost-effectiveness and appropriateness, “best quality for the lowest price.”
  • Have all necessary supporting primary documentation for financial and accounting reporting.
  • Include payment for services and goods necessary for effective, high-quality, and timely project implementation.
  • Include payment for expert work by specialists, trainers, and other involved experts.

Unacceptable Budget Expenses Include:

  • Preparation of the project proposal for competition participation.
  • Creation and registration of the organization.
  • Reimbursement for costs related to currency exchange rate fluctuations.
  • Providing direct fiscal support to government authorities.
  • Activities leading to direct or indirect discrimination of any social groups.
  • Projects aimed at profit generation from activities.
  • Purchase of humanitarian aid and/or military equipment.
  • Financial support to third organizations (sub-granting).

The Foundation does not grant funds to political parties, religious communities, individuals, or profit-oriented entities. The final decision regarding grant support is non-negotiable, and reasons for refusal will not be provided.

Submitted materials will not be returned or reviewed. Only one application per organization will be considered (the one that was received/registered in the system first).
