Cervical cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women worldwide, particularly affecting those aged 30–55. It develops in the cervix, which connects the uterus to the vagina. This disease often progresses silently, but early signs may include:

  • Irregular vaginal bleeding (between periods, after intercourse, or post-menopause).
  • Unusual vaginal discharge.
  • Pelvic pain or discomfort during intercourse.

Risk Factors:

  • Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) strains.
  • Smoking.
  • Weakened immune system.
  • Early sexual activity or multiple sexual partners.
  • Lack of regular cervical screenings (PAP tests).

Statistical Context and WHO Call to Action

Statistics show that Ukrainians often have a low level of awareness about chronic diseases and their prevention. Joining the World Health Organization (WHO) in their call to "Get informed, get screened, get vaccinated," the Health Solutions team is sharing essential tips and resources to help protect yourself and your loved ones from this disease.
We remind doctors and communities that educational and awareness-raising efforts are vital to integrating healthy habits and lifestyles into society.

Building Healthier Communities: Inspired by German Experience

For over a year, through the "Healthy Communities" project, we have implemented successful elements of Germany's Gesundes Kinzigtal system, focusing on integrating medical and caregiving services. In Kinzigtal, this approach has shown outstanding results in preventing diseases and promoting healthy living among local residents.

As part of this approach, we have already established diabetes schools in five communities:
  • Pervomaisk
  • Bucha
  • Kramatorsk
  • Mukachevo
  • Skvyra
Expanding Preventive Interventions

However, diabetes is not the only chronic threat to public health. This year, we aim to collaborate with communities to develop new interventions to prevent chronic diseases, including cancer.

Why Early Prevention and Screening Matter

Timely prevention and early detection significantly reduce risks and increase the chances of successful treatment. Cervical cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women in Ukraine, especially in the 30–55 age group.

Opportunities for Free Screening in Ukraine

The Medical Guarantees Program allows Ukrainian women to access free diagnostics for early detection of cervical cancer. Among the most accessible and effective methods of early diagnosis is the PAP test, which can be performed by a gynecologist.
Another way to prevent cancer development is through hysteroscopy, included in the list of six free diagnostic procedures for early cancer detection. Details about the conditions for receiving free services are available on the website of the National Health Service of Ukraine.

Final Reminder

Health is the most valuable aspect of life, and we must do everything possible to protect it. Don’t ignore the signals from your body—schedule regular check-ups and screenings to stay informed and proactive.
